DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- This reporter was among the few to witness the execution of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Florida's death chamber at Starke prison on a hot October afternoon in 2002.

The year before, this reporter was embedded in a crowded Daytona courtroom for the civil trial brought by Dale Earnhardt's widow in her quest to keep his autopsy files sealed just months after he was killed instantly after slamming into the outside concrete retaining wall nearly head-on at 185 mph on the last lap of the Daytona 500.

And this reporter kept his head down as he was hastily escorted - small video camera in one hand and an asthma inhaler in the other - directly to a large SUV, with tinted windows, which he stepped into for an exclusive interview with Trayvon Martin's parents in downtown Miami on a hot April night in 2012, as literally hundreds of stunned camera crews stood mostly dumbfounded - some visibly upset having stood for hours behind a cordoned-off area the length of a football field hoping for an interview that the grief-stricken parents only gave to this reporter just before a massive rally got under way that drew 20,000 strong.

So who was this intrepid reporter? Meet Henry Frederick.

Covering the news has been Frederick's obsession in Central Florida for nearly 25 years - nearly a decade as a metro reporter with the Daytona Beach News-Journal on the cops & courts beat, and for the last dozen-plus years online with Headline Surfer.

And while countless reporters have come and gone, more so in recent years with cuts in newsroom staffing, especially in the daily newspapers, Frederick has adapted to the changing times and circumstances.

Life-saving aneurysm-heart surgery & earning a master's degree

Frederick, who has had to battle some serious recurring health issues over the past four years stemming from a massive ascending aorta aneurysm that damaged a valve in his heart that required life-saving surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center in March 2016, has continued covering the news online with Headline Surfer, and even earned an advanced degree.

Overcoming Adversity / Headline SurferFrederick, who has had to battle some serious recurring health issues over the past four years stemming from a massive ascending aorta aneurysm that damaged a valve in his heart that required life-saving surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center in March 2016, has continued covering the news online with Headline Surfer, and even earned an advanced degree.

Still, with countless hospitalizations sincethe invasive surgery, Frederick won a bunch of awards during these past nearly 4 1/2 years and even earned a Master of Arts degree in New Media Journalism in February 2019, from Full Sail University.

He considers the master's a major achievement in his life, considering it was 35 years after he earned hia bachelor's. He ranks this third behind raising his only child, Henry IV, now 27, and his lonstanding journalism career; first and second, respectively.

Writing a book based on a song by The Cars

Frederick's in the process of writing the first of three books planned before the illness, "Just What I Needed," based on a 1978 song by The Cars, on how music has shaped his career and life in general.

The book chronicles his early interests as a cub reporter in his mid-teens growing up in Southern New England when the new wave-rock song was a big hit on radio stations like WBCH-Boston; WAAF-Worcester, MA; WCCC-Hartford, CT; and WPLR-New Haven-CT.

The book looks at his college years in the early 1980s and the advent of cable music channels such as MTV and VH-1; and how music has influenced his life over the years since. The book is expected to go to print in 2021.

Sharing insights on high-profile homicides

killers Having witnessed the execution of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Florida's death chamber back in 2002, and other high profile cases over the years since then, such as the George Zimmerman murder trial, Frederick has appeared on crime shows like the Oxygen Network's "Snapped" in the early 2000s as a media guest for an episode on Virginia Larzelere, who was on Death Row for having her husband killed to cash in on a life-insurance policy; her death sentence later tossed in favor of time in prison (she's expected to be released in the near future).

Over the last half decade, Frederick has appeared on national crime documentary programs on Discovery ID and Reelz for his investigative reporting and high-profile cops & courts breaking news coverage.

2020: Policing, politics & the pandemic

Frederick has expanded content on Headline Surfer, including a Hall of Fame section and multimedia feature presentations, such as a countdown of Central Florida's Top 100 Cops.

And he's publishing candidate endorsements for the 2020 elections and coverage of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, here in Central Florida and around the world.
