SAMSULA -- A 37-year-old New Smyrna Beach man was killed Saturday night when he was ejected from a car that struck a cement culvert and flipped.

David Legler, who was not wearing his seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 11:20 p.m. crash on North Samsula Drive and Strawberry Lane.

The driver, Donna Leo, 48, also of New Smyrna Beach, suffered only minor injuries behind the wheel of her 1996 Honda Accord. She was transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

Here is a synopsis of what happened as described by Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes: The drive was traveling southbound on Samsula Drive. For an unknown reason, she was unable to maintain control of the vehicle, which traveled from the southbound lane across the northbound lane onto the east shoulder. The car then traveled into a ditch, striking a concrete culvert. Upon impact with the culvert, the vehicle flipped end over end, coming to final rest on its roof facing south. The front passenger, who was unrestrained, was ejected from car, suffering fatal injuries.

An investigation is ongoing to determine if alcohol was a factor and charges are pending, Montes said.
