NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 60-year-old bicyclist lost his life after pedaling into the path of an oncoming car on Peninsula Drive, just south of the intersection with Flagler Avenue just after 2:08 p.m. Tuesday, New Smyrna Beach police said.

The victim, identified as Daniel Nicholas Raimondo, of South Atlantic Avenue, was initially treated at the scene by New Smyrna Beach firefighters and EVAC paramedics before being airlifted from the North Causeway Bridge. He died en route to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, police Cmdr. Bill Drossman said.

According to initial police reports,  Raimondo pedaled was riding east and crossed the North Causeway bridge, but once at  the intersection of Peninsula and Flagler, he ignored a red light and pedaled into the path of a Chevy driven driven by Robert Hall, 24, of Illinois. Police said the driver will not be charged.

The North Causeway Bridge was closed to traffic in both directions for at least a half hour, which jammed up the side streets off Flagler for more than an hour, with motorists forced to use the South Causeway Bridge to enter and leave the beachside.
