Our vets deserve better

EDGEWATER, Fla -- I am incensed at the treatment of the men and women of the military who were promised sign on bonuses to reenlist, did their duty and are now being asked for that money back.

Some I have heard have paid the government back more than $50,000 because not only are they being asked to return the original sum but they are also being charged interest. How can this be happening?

I heard that the government recruiters’ screwed up and instead of giving this bonus to certain qualifiers they gave it to everyone. It is not the fault of those who believed in their government and their duty to country. They did not make the mistake. To ask anyone in our military especially those who saw combat more than once and those who were wounded or maimed during that time to return any money to our government is a travesty. We all owe them so much more than they received.

These brave men and women returned home to a country that had so messed up the VA that they die waiting for health care, a country with no jobs and that is after they had to have family members send them materials to fortify their vehicles and living areas so maybe they could survive bullets or IEDs. They work for a pittance compared to congressmen who sit on their butts voting themselves higher and higher salaries, taking entire summers off or closing the government down because they can’t compromise and keep the doors open.

If I were one of these folks being asked for that money back it would be a cold day in hell before I’d pay it. These are the kinds of ridiculous things going on in this country that are making elections such as the one upcoming into such farces. People are just plain sick of politics as it is. I hear many say they just won’t vote at all because neither candidate is any good.

We must all exercise our right to vote and then try our best to make known to our representatives what we want to see fixed in our country. We, as a people, can affect change if we will all get together and make our needs known as a group. The way to do that is vote out the ones who don’t truly represent their constituents and vote someone in who is better and keep doing it until the politicians finally see that it truly is We The People who run the country.

Then maybe we’ll get somewhere.
