NSBNews.net sends its condolences to the family and friends of Ponce Inlet Police Chief Wayne Lurcock who passed away suddenly this morning. He was 60 years old.
One friend in particular is Max Binz, the department's lieutenant, who returned my call and spoke briefly since he was with Chief Lurcock's immediate family at the funeral home.
Asked to describe his relationship with Lurcock, Bin responded in a cracking voice: "He meant so much to me. It's beyond words to describe. He was my best friend."
Lurcock was hired Oct. 1, just five days shy of his one-year anniversary as Ponce Inlet's top cop. He had a long and distinguished career as a lieutenant with the Daytona Beach Police Department before that.
Often times in this economy, the public focus is on holding back the costs of providing essential public safety services. The stress that comes with the economic and political aspects of administering a police force, no matter how large or small, is something that perhaps gets lost in the shuffle.
Chief Lurcock, Ponce Inlet's finest, will be missed.
