44. Mulder withdraws from state rep. race and replacement Dem. Giorno crushed by Santiago
Democrat Phil Giorno, shown at far left, wasn't on the ballot in replacing Dennis Mulder who withdrew midway through the campaign for dist. 27 state representative. Regardless, Republican David Santiago, shown below, easily won the election.
DELTONA -- Phil Giorno had enough headaches as chairman of the Volusia County Democratic Executive Committee when he stepped in to run for the district 27 state representative seat for Dennis Mulder who had to resign because of a family illness.
Because of the timing, though, Mulder's name remained on the ballot per state election laws.
Regardless, Stan Escudero, chairman of the Volusia County Republican Executive Commiee, said it wouldn't have mattered who was on the ballot against Republican David Santiago. There was no way he was going to lose. Giorno conceded as much in the waning days of the election since Santiago had been actively campaigning since qualifying back in June.
When the polls closed in November, Santiago was the overwhelming victor with nearly 55 percent of the vote over Giorno, a former Volusia County councilman.
The replacement candidate issue comes in at No. 44 in Headline Surfer's countdown of the top 100 stories of 2012.
