DAYTONA BEACH -- Gary Davidson, the chief spokesman for the Volusia County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that Sheriff Ben Johnson suffered a "minor heart attack" eight days ago and that he has since made a full recovery and returned to work the following Monday.
It was on April 18, a Saturday afternoon, that Johnson, first elected as sheriff in 2000, went to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach after experiencing chest pains, agency spokesman Gary Davidson confirmed overnight.
"During examination at the hospital, it was determined that the sheriff had suffered a mild heart attack," Davidson told Headline Surfer®. "He was admitted to the hospital overnight and was discharged (a week ago) Sunday afternoon and is doing quite well."

Although he was advised to take it easy, the 63-year-old Johnson stopped by his office a couple of times to visit with the staff, the spokesman said, adding, "I’ve visited with the sheriff in the office this week and have also spoken to him by phone and can report that he looks and feels good, is in great spirits and is looking forward to returning to work (this) week."
Johnson is the second leading Volusia County elected official official to suffer a heart attack.
Ciounty Chair Jason Davis spent two days in the intensive care unit at Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach and a third in a private room there after suffering what was a confirmed heart attack on April 10.
A stent was implanted, his third in the past decade, since he had his first heart attack. Davis, 52, is midway through his first four-year term as county chair.
