NSB's new city manager has a busy first day

She caught a breather for a few minutes outside the Administrative Office Building off the North Causeway in the early afternoon with Mayor Sally Mackay, having spent all morning meeting many of the city's 280-plus employees with stops at the main City Hall, fire stations, Public Works, Police Station and the Municipal Golf Course. Today, she gets down to business refining the new fiscal budget.

NSB citizens group declares victory with city lease opinion; takes aim at election incumbents

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla – Concerned Citizens of New Smyrna Beach announced today that it had achieved the first victory in a recently launched effort to reform its local government by virtue of a legal opinion that puts in doubt a longstanding "sweetheart" lease between the city and the Angler's Club for exclusive use of 43 boat slips .

Gordon "Buster" C. Hounsell Jr., 81, of Laconia, N.H., and formerly of Edgewater, died Friday, July 24, 2009.

Ruth Neal Jones, 73, of New Smyrna Beach, who operated a cleaning business and enjoyed sewing, quilting, fishing, golfing and spending time with her family, died Friday, July 24, 2009.

Joseph Parkinson, 79, of Edgewater, a native of Lincoln, N.H., died Friday, July 24, 2009.

Congresswoman Kosmas announces federal grant monies for cop positions in Daytona Beach, DeLand and South Daytona

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach (FL-24) announced today that cities in Volusia County have been allocated funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, COPS Hiring Recovery Program. The grants will fund eight police officer positions in Daytona Beach, three in Deland and one in South Daytona Beach.

NSB hit-and-run fatality suspect makes bail

Jana Calisse Grant, 47, of New Smyrna Beach, accused in the fatal hit-and-run accident that left a 42-year-old Port Orange man dead on the side of the road on the North Causeway, has bonded out of jail. She met a friend at her Canal Street salon soon after the fatal crash instead of rendering help, according to New Smyrna Beach police investigators who carried out an exhaustive investigation that led to her arrest eight months after Glenn Scott Gagnon was left to die on the side of the North Causeway.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Jana Calisse Grant, the 47-year-old salon owner accused of striking a pedestrian and leaving him to die and then washing his blood off her vehicle at a nearby car wash, avoided a first appearance before a judge Saturday at the Volusia Branch Jail by making bail.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal is the classic case of why daily metro newspapers are on their way out. The News-Journal is boring, reactive and filled with inane government meeting coverage and press-release generated cop news. This is the 21st century and people want their news now.
