Approvals on Flagler Avenue hotel null and void because adjoining property owners weren't formally noticed

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The City Commission and Planning Board approvals for the building of a hotel on Flagler Avenue are null and void because adjoining property owners were not properly notified of public hearings for the planning portion, Interim City Manager Pam Brangaccio said today.

"It's a do-over," Brangaccio said, "like in the movie Groundhog Day."

Ormond Beach motorcycle crash critically injures rider; passenger dies

ORMOND BEACH -- A motorcyclist was clinging to life today and his passenger killed when he struck a guardrail and then a tree while trying to turn onto Fluhart Drive from Riverside Drive, police said.

The passenger, Michael Leveille, 29, of Paltkawas pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:40 a.m. accident, police said.

Steven Row, 25, of Ormond Beach, was transported by EVAC to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach with life threatening injuries.

Neither man was wearing a helmet, police said. The force of the crash split the sport bike in half, police said.

Oak Hill included in burn ban for unincorporated areas of Volusia County as of Saturday

VOLUSIA COUNTY FIRE SERVICES ISSUES BURN BAN

DELAND -- Due to the dry conditions throughout the county, Volusia County Fire Services has issued an outdoor burn ban for the county’s
unincorporated area effective 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. The ban also applies to Oak Hill, Lake Helen and Pierson.

Spruce Creek Fly-In under precautionary boil water notice

PORT ORANGE -- A precautionary water boil notice is in effect for 1,437 homes in the Spruce Creek Fly-in subdivision west of Port Orange.

The boil water notice was issued after water treatment plant operators detected a low chlorine residual. The problem has been corrected, Volusia County officials said.

Residents are being notified through an internal notification system and signs at the entrances and in the subdivision.

Sheriff's Office searching for missing 5-year-old DeLeon Springs boy

DELEON SPRINGS -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is looking for a missing 5-year-old DeLeon Springs boy who was last seen in the back yard of his home.

Kaleb Carreli is a white male about 45 inches tall and weighing 52 pounds. He has blue eyes, blond hair and a star-shaped scar over his left eyebrow.

Pierson man among a dozen across Florida charged with illegally possessing foxes or coyotes

PIERSON -- A 71-year-old Pierson man was among a dozen people in eight counties charged with illegally purchasing and poessessing live foxes and coyotes, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Charles Jones of Person and 11 others in Bay, Calhoun, Clay, Columbia, Gilchrist and Okaloosa counties were nabbed Tuesday night, concluding a 10-month investigation.
