Free education programs offered to kids and adults at NSB's Babe James Center

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla -- Children and adults alike Youth and adults soon will have a convenient avenue to success. The City of New Smyrna Beach is partnering on two education programs to make it easier for youth and adults to receive their GED.

NSB cops: 2 critically injured when pick-up truck crashes head-on into tree on US 1 near three bridges area

NSB crash sceneNEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A motorist and his passenger were critically injured early this morning when he lost control of his small pick-up truck while southbound on US 1 near Creekside Circle, just south of the three bridges area, crossed into the northbound lanes and smashed head on into a tree, police said. 

Here is a synopsis of the 2:11 a.m. Tuesday crash as described by Sgt. Shane Riggle in his report: "The driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed the median into the northbound lanes. The vehicle continued across the roadway until it struck several signs and a large tree head on. The male driver and a male passenger were seriously injured in the crash."

Persis on top so far in race for county chair with nemesis Doran trailing even newcomer Davis

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Carl Persis is on top in the race for Volusia county chair with Jason Davis a distant second and power attorney Ted Doran on the outside looking in with half the precincts reporting.

Deb Denys is leading in the district 3 county council race with Jim Hathaway a close second and Justin Kennedy a distant third. In the race for state attorney, Stasia Warren is well ahead of incumbent RJ Larizza in Volusia County, but these preliminary results don't include Flagler, Putnam and St. Johns counties.

Incumbent Supervisor of Elections Ann McFall winning big in four-way race

Ann McFallNEW SMYRNA BEACH -- With more than half the polling precints reporting in tonight's primary, Supervisor of Elections Ann McFall is well on her way to winning re-election with 66.2 percent of the votes mong the four candidates.

Should she stay above the 50 percent mark, McFall won't have to deal with a November runoff with the second place finisher.

Nice guys like Edgewater's Justin Kennedy eventually finish first

Justin KennedyEDGEWATER -- Back in the day, 1948, big league manager Leo Durocher coined the phrase, "Nice guys finish last." But then again, Durocher also said, "I come to win."

On primary night, first-term Edgewater Councilman Justin Kennedy indeed finished last in the three-way race for the dist. 3 seat on the Volusia County Council. And there's no doubt he's a nice guy, too.
