Schedule now for the Q3 community economics briefing

– The Volusia County Department of Economic Development will conduct an economics briefing to business, banking, education and local government leaders beginning at 7:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at the Daytona Beach International Airport. The briefing will be in the Volusia Room which is on the second level in the main terminal. The briefing will highlight the area’s employment trends, commercial and residential building activities, and the latest residential foreclosure rates for the months of April, May and June. The seating for this event is limited to the first 120 registrants.

NSB Shrimp and Seafood Festival on Flagler Avenue Aug. 14

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- What better way to celebrate the culinary delights of an oceanfront community than with a street festival? The merchants of Flagler Avenue plan to do just that with the inaugural New Smyrna Beach Shrimp & Seafood Festival on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. event will b hosted by the Merchants of Flagler Avenue Hospitality Group.

"The event promises to be the largest seafood festival in Volusia County," said Adele Aletti, owner of Gone Bonkers and an organizer. "During the event Flagler Avenue will be open only to pedestrian traffic."

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- From a distance to swimmers, surfers and sunbathers, the mammoth wet dirt spewing from a large piece of machinery looks like an oil well run amok, but it's really wet sand being pumped from the Intracoastal Waterway several miles away through a piping network snaking along the edge of the sand dunes.

Feeney says independent challenger talked 'sense' at local debate

Louise Rathburn, 89, of Edgewater, died Wednesday, May 21. 2008. She was a former owner of the Para Palm Motel.

Robert W. Henning, 83, New Smyrna Beach, died Monday, May 19, 2008. He was a former design engineer and inventor of  tool system.

Warene Sidelinger, 48, of New Smyrna Beach, died Thursday, May 15, 2008. She was a housekeeper for Sea Club IV.
