Shadow claims victory in lawsuit against city involving cell phone records; city attorney says case not over

Circuit Judge Robert K. Rouse ruled April 8 that telephone numbers listed on city-issued cell phones are public record, but certain numbers on phones issued to police that relate to their home numbers and confidential informants are exempt. The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed against the city last year by Bill of Rights, Inc., the umbrella corporation of the Shadow Web site operated by Nahum Litt, a retired federal judge, who routinely takes city officials to task in his weekly postings. NSBNEWS.net has obtained a copy of Rouse's ruling through a public records request, which is attached.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Phone calls made on city-issued phones are subject to public inspection, a circuit judge has ruled in a case brought against the city of New Smyrna Beach by Web site operator, the Shadow.

The former New Smyrna Beach High School complex has been an eyesore for a decade now, but that's about to change with big bucks coming from the county through an ECHO grant to make way for the Mosquito Lagoon Marine Enhancement Center.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- City Commissioner Jack Grasty was all smiles Friday and why not? The city received two ECHO grants from Volusia County: $600,000 for the Mosquito Lagoon Marine Enhancement Center at the former New Smyrna Beach High School, and $281,853 for the city's portion of the Cross Volusia Trail.

NSB cops: Would-be robber runs away after intended victims scream for help on North Myrtle and Ronnoc

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Police are on the lookout for a man with a handgun who tried to rob two people on North Myrtle Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Latrieka Chantel Hinson, 22, told police officer B. A. Morris that she and a friend were approached by a white man on North Myrtle near Ronnoc Lane, who displayed a handgun and demanded money from them.
Hinson told police she and her friend screamed out for help and the gunman ran off.

NSB cops: U.S. 1 crash victim stable after rollover; charges pending

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The motorist airlifted to Halifax Medical Center after striking another vehicle and overturning his Isuzu Rodeo several times before striking a tree on U.S. 1 Wednesday night, has been identified as 44-year-old David M. Weightman of New Smyrna Beach. He was listed Thursday night in stable condition.
