NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The 392 graduating seniors of the New Smyrna Beach Class of 2012 has received $2,218,368 in scholarship monies. That's a whopping $2.2 million.

New Smyrna Beach High School's Troupe 1903 needs help from the community in its fundraising efforts to cover the $20,000 expense of participating in is trying to raise money to participate in a big festival next month in Nebraska.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A group of kids -- really good kids -- have a chance to showcase their talents, but they can't do it without help from the community that hungers for feel-good stories in a fast-paced world where teenagers are admired for what they can do on the football field or on the other extreme, getting into trouble.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Perhaps the middle initial "A" in Alexandria A. Spradlin's name is symbolic of her academic achiement at New Smyrna Beach High School. After all, the senior has been named finalist in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship competition.

"New Smyrna Beach High School is pleased to announce that Alexandria A. Spradlin is a finalist," Principal Jim Tager said.

Spradlin is one of 14,400 semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship program. She is the daughter of Christina and Gregory Spradlin.

Test drive a new Ford Motor Company car courtesy of Mullinax Ford at New Smyrna Beach High School to help raise $8,000 for the Cudas

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Mullinax Ford is offering New Smyrna Beach High School the opportunity to raise $8,000. Members of the community can earn money for NSBHS by simply test-driving a new Ford at the school, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 7.

For each person who takes a Ford for a spin during the "Ford Drive One 4 UR School" event, Ford Motor Company will donate $20 to New Smyrna Beach High School for up to 300 drivers. Mullinax Ford will donate an additional $2,000 for an additional 100 drivers - 400 Drivers equals $8,000. What a deal!

Samsula Woman's Club to hold yard sale with proceeds to benefit college-bound students with local ties

SAMSULA -- The Samsula Woman's Club will host a "community yard sale, 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 31, with proceeds to offer scholarships to local college-bound students who attended Samsula Elementary School or have close ties to the Samsula community.

Come shop the bargains or sell your own items. Spaces are available for $5; sellers must provide their own table. The sale will be held at the SNPJ Lodge, 421 Samsula Drive, Samsula, outside the New Smyrna Beach city limits in unincorporated Volusia County. Back to School: First day for children across Volusia County

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Crossing guard Donna Bryant had her trusty orange and yellow vest on and portable two-way stop sign in her right hand at 7:15 p.m. as she began the hour-long task of helping children -- and parents there with some of them -- cross Ronnoc Lane at Palm Street for the first day of school.

"I love it," she said with a smile, of her routine, which she has been doing now for 11 years. "I love being with the kids and meeting the parents."
