The year's biggest stories showcased on NSBNEWS.net

By going over the top 100 stories of 2009 here at NSBNEWS.net, it is amazing to see just how much went on here in New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Oak Hill.

We had local people winning national cooking contests, while here at home did a lot of good things while some did some very bad things. Our NSB High School football team gave us an exciting season, including a great Homecoming victory and some post-season success. We had a major turnover in municipal government and some nasty weather to go along with the sunshine, and of course, some shark bites.

Wherever the news occurred, the best journalist in Volusia County, Henry Frederick, was there to cover it. And in many cases, Henry's wife, Sera, was with him shooting video. We are blessed to have the talents of the Fredericks and this online format to showcase the biggest stories that showed how we as a community for the most part triumphed over adversity and thrived despite the worst recession in decades.

What the top 100 stories shows This is a for the team triumphing over adversity, we have had a turn over in the city hall and many more things. This is a busy city.

The one thing readers should notice is that an internet newspaper gives them a multi-media format with the combination of traditional journalism in words and pictures, plus aidio and visual elements. You can hear and the reported news along with reading a report or synopsis of what happened. Certainly, the Medicine Shoppe fatal shooting is a classic example of all those elements coming together. That is not something the print media can provide.

The Medicine Shoppe was Henry's choice as the No. 1 story not only because of the magnitude of the crime, but the realization of it through an audio-visual presentation. Besides the dramatic swift action, this story is very satisfying to me personally because for once, a really bad person got what he deserved without hesitation by the armed retired cop and without any innocent bystanders being harmed.

Politics and city government took a prominent role in the next group of stories as they are so important to the residents of new Smyrna Beach. Again the viewer is treated to copious video and audio presentations. The viewer can hear and see and his local officials in action and evaluate them directly. The debates, organized by the Public Watch Committee and NSBNEWS.net illustrated that.

Danny Veltri from Flip Flop’s restaurant won the competition for the top chef on Fox reality TV’s Hells Kitchen. This is truly an unusual accomplishment.

The year was filled with many stories. There were murders and car accidents, indiscretions by prominent individuals and many good things like the Edgewater fireworks.

You can bet that the coming year will bring a lot of exciting action in greater New Smyrna Beach.

The NSBNEWS is dedicated to bringing you the important and interesting news from our fair city as it happens. Our ability to bring you the news is being constantly upgraded.

We fully intend to do even better this year in covering everything that should be covered as we celebrate our second anniversary in April.

If news is happening, you can be certain Henry Frederick , who has won a ton of journalism awards over the years, will be on top of it and his wife, Sera, will have the video.
