In one meeting; one highly anticipated, highly controversial, highly watched meeting, the future of teens everywhere in Volusia County were dramatically changed!
Ok, maybe it wasn’t that big of a deal to most people, but for us teens and preteens, it was a big deal. It’s official: Volusia County schools accepted the new dress code. With that comes a lot of new rules that students aren’t exactly happy with it. To a degree, the dress code hasn’t changed much and some changed for the better. We can’t wear low cut shirts and guys can’t wear baggy pants.
I mean, I think that these rules are good because no one wants to see, “all that”, and it surely doesn’t make guys cool to buy pants too big for them, on purpose. Now there are these other rules like no spaghetti straps, but I can handle that.

However, it is Florida so it would be nice to be able to wear a shirt where the sleeves don’t have to completely cover the shoulders. Some girls also wear off the shoulder shirts but they will no longer be able to wear them.
Other than that, another change has been headwear. We can no longer wear hats, bandannas or even sunglasses at any time during the school day. The only problem with this is our courtyard is white. So when it’s sunny, (like 90% of the time), the sun reflects off of it making it blinding to the students walking through it.
Basically the final rule is regarding the length of shorts and shirts. Shirts now must be worn past the belt line and if a shirt goes past half way down the thigh, it must be tucked in. Shorts, shirts and dresses must be worn to at least half way down the thigh.
For the most part, I’m okay with the length that shorts must be. I do think that some girls wear shorts that really need to be longer. However, when it’s hot, it would be nice to wear shorts that are actually, well, short.
The only real problem I have is the fact that school activity-related outfits are allowed. For example, cheerleading outfits are allowed even though they are not even close to being half way down the thigh.

Some people are outraged by the new dress code but if we don’t comply, there’s a very high chance we will get uniforms. And that’s a whole other blog.
