NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- For the second time in less than two years, Mark C. Barringer has been arrested on DUI charges that resulted in him crashing a motor vehicle, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Barringer, 25, was arrested 4:53 Monday after wrecking his car in the vicinity of 300 Flagler Ave., according to a police report by officer Joseph Hunchard. When Hunchard responded, he found the driver asleep at the wheel with his Nissan Frontier in the middle of Flagler Avenue with the engine running.

Hunchard said he had to awaken the driver, who had a strong odor of alcohol and bloodshot eyes. He was unsteady on his feet and failed field sobriety tests, the officer said in his report, adding Barringer refused a breathalyzer test.

A nearby palm tree was struck by the vehicle's front right side, Hunchard wrote in his report. The wrecked vehicle was towed by Edgewater Towing & Recovery, which is on the police rotation. Barringer was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail on a charge of DUI (alcohol & drugs) as a second offense and being involved in a crash with damage, along with several traffic infractions. He was later released on $2,500 bail:

Barringer was previously arrested June 10, 2010, on charges of DUI causing a crash and leaving the scene of a crash causing property damage. According to a police report Barringer was behind the wheel of a Jeep when he struck a pick-up truck on North Peninsula driven by Greg Arnette, a local aviator. He entered a plea of no contest on Jan. 20 to driving under the influence of alcohol stemming from his 2010 arrest.

Barringer was subsequently adjudicated guilty, sentenced to probation of six DUI probation with conditions that he pay total court costs of $961, submit to random drug testing, complete 50 hours of community service, attend DUI school and drug rehab.  His driver's license was revoked for six months. Court records (CJIS) show a notice of completion of probation conditions entered on July 21.
