NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- This week I had the opportunity to interact with Southeast Volusia County’s younger generation on two occasions.
On Tuesday, New Smyrna Beach High School students from Teresa Tyson’s honors American history course came to city hall for a “mock” city commission meeting.
Students sat in for each elected official and a number of city staffers. It was refreshing to see the young faces at the dais and among the crowd.
On Wednesday, I was afforded an opportunity to speak at the Port Orange City Council meeting where two members of that city’s younger generation were appointed to a youth advisory council to advise the city council.
I feel like New Smyrna Beach could benefit from the input of its younger citizens. After having such positive interaction with these youngsters, I plan to propose at the next City Commission meeting that New Smyrna Beach form its own Youth Advisory Board to give input on the issues effecting the younger generations.

This additional input will give a voice to an oft-ignored group of New Smyrna’s citizenry. It is important to get the youth of our community involved, because they will soon be our leaders in both government and industry.
