NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A fire at Hunt's Steakhouse, 1518 S. Dixie Freeway, that had flames shooting out the rear and through the roof, was extinguished Saturday night by the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at 9:58 p.m. and had it under control at 10:40 p.m. Eleven minutes later the fire was completely extinguished.
Here is a synopsis of what happened as described by firedepartment spokesman Randy Wright: "Firefighters began extinguishing the fire found on the exterior of the building. Upon entering the building firefighters extinguished the fire which was confined to the kitchen and food storage areas. Difficulty was encountered during extinguishment of the involved roof area due to building and roof construction."
Wright said in his press release that preliminary findings show the cause of the fire points to a "towel/llaundry," though he wasn't more specific, except to say an investigation is ongoing. The restaurant was closed to customers at the time and no injuries were reported.
The single story, mason structure is owned by Rosario Spagnolo of Maitland. The fire department responded with four trucks and 14 firefighters.
