NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A precautionary boil water notice has been issued for the next day or two for 225 customers after a pre-dawn 6-inch water break on Wayne Avenue at the intersection of Fairway Drive. Shortly after 1 p.m. water was restored, said Ellen Fisher, spokeswoman for the Utilities Commission of New Smyrna Beach.
"After crews arrived on the scene and received emergency line locates, field operations personnel were able to commence valving off," Fisher said. "The break occurred in between two 6-inch valves next to this intersection. The >flow of water exposed a rupture at a former repair spot, next to a full circle clamp on the 6-inch AC pipe.
Assistance from LS/Maint. Division with a secondary pump unit was also dispatched, she said. For the repair, 20 feet of new pipe was installed and replacement of an isolation valve. After review of this site, a new stormwater catch basin is approximately 6 feet from the site of failure which has flowable fill around the basis and associated culvert pipes, Fisher said.
"This was probably a contributable factor, as was a 900-pair cable on top of this water main which added point loading to this zone where the failure occurred," Fisher explained. "This cable has been repositioned to allow some separation and backfill will allow cushion around the newly installed water pipe."
Some 255 services were affected by this break, Fisher said, leading to the 24-48-hour boil water notice. Door hangers were issued to the effected residences at the start and will also be issued at the end of this precautionary boil water notice period, she added.
