Citizen of the Year / Headline Surfer

Honorable Mention: Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson

Bill Roe of Ocean Properties in NSB Top Citizen / Headline SurferVolusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson hon. mention top citizen / Headline SurferNEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Bill Roe, proprietor of Ocean Properties, the premier Realtor in New Smyrna Beach, is Headline Surfer's choice as the 2012 "Citizen of the Year" for his patriotic spirit and loyalty to God, country and overall standing in the community.

Honorable mention for this year-end award is Sheriff Ben Johnson who handled himself with class and distinction in his successful re-election as Volusia County's top cop.

Both recipients will be recognized with a profile story this week and a certificate, along with a place on the home page for the remainder of 2013.

Roe was upset that a thief or thieves stole the American flag from the flagpole of his beachside offices. So instead of sulking, he replaced it with another flag and held a special ceremony to mark the occasion. Headline Surfer covered the patriotic event with an array of photos and a video.

Johnson didn't have much competition for his job, despite the aggressive campaign waged by his opponent. Instead of mixing it up and returning fire, Johnson took the high road and emphasized his leadership while giving praise to the men and women who serve under his command.

Headline Surfer is proud to recognize these two outstanding gentlemen for their achievements in 2012.
