DAYTONA BEACH -- With less than a 6 percent voter turnout, Ida Duncan Wright easily outpolled Kathy Williams, the widow of deceased school board member Al Williams in the Tuesday runoff election.
Wright received 2,151 votes or 57.68 percent to 1,578 votes or 42.32 percent.
Only 3,731 people in the zoned seat voted among the 66,334 registered voters.
Two of the votes cast were counted as blanks, meaning either the bubbles weren't filled in enough to be scanned or no selections were made or a combination thereof.
Still every vote that was counted added up secured victory for Wright who was ecstatic with the final result.
The Daytona Beach resident and Bethune-Cookman University educator posted a statement on her Facebook page this morning, thanking those who did vote, saying in part, "Without your support, this candidacy would not have been possible. I am deeply humbled to serve as your Volusia County School Board representative."
Wright continued, "I pledge to represent our District 2 Community with a high degree of integrity. Each decision made will be thoughtful and backed by extensive research. Remember, I will need you in order for us to be successful in this endeavor. We will work together to build a first-class educational system."

Though Wright won the Dec. 18 primary in a field of four with nearly 39 percent of the vote, Williams, who finished second at nearly 26 percent in an equally dismal voter turnout in the single digits. And that meant district 2 voters from Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Shores, South Daytona Ponce Inlet, and parts of Port Orange were expected to vote again in Tuesday'a runoff.
