DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Volusia County Beach Safety flew the red flag on Wednesday, rescuing six people out of the ocean without incident.

"We are starting to see the afternoon thunderstorms, which usually have lightning," Deputy Chief Tamra Malphurs said. "Summer is the most dangerous season for lightning with the most lightning fatalities occurring in June, July, and August. If at the beach, keep in mind that lightning can strike 10 miles from the storm. Beachgoers are reminded that if at the beach and they hear thunder they should go indoors. Lifeguards will also wave people out of the water and ask beachgoers to exit the beach if a storm is approaching or if there is lightning in the area."

The best way to stay up-to-date with everything beach related is to download the new Volusia Beaches app, available for free on the Google Play and iTunes App stores. The new app provides real-time updates on the status of beach ramps and staffed lifeguard towers, as well as beach conditions, off-beach parking, and more.
