Breaking News: Balloon launches scrubbed at New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport, but air shows a go

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Strong winds forced officials to scrub this morning's manned balloon launches.

But the sun is out and thousands are expected to check out the litany of air show events, carnival rides and plenty of hot dogs, hamburgers and cold drinks. Paul Roy, one of the organizers of the fourth annual New Smyrna Beach Balloon and SkyFest, made the announcement just after 8 a.m.

"The winds are reported strong at 500 feet," he said over a loud speaker. "No take off."

Sally Mackay, one of the founders of the event and former New Smyrna Beach mayor said Mother Nature calls the shots. "With the wind out of the west, balloons launched here would end up in the ocean and we can't have that."

Today is the third and final day of what has become New Smyrna Beach's signature family event with thousands here Saturday for the air shows. With beautiful weather and clear blue skis, organizers are expecting large crowds today for the air shows.

Admission is only $2 and parking is free.
