BREAKING NEWS: Return trip to Miami turns deadly for I-95 motorist near New Smyrna Beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A Miami woman was killed and one of her two children critically injured early this morning after she apparently fell asleep at the wheel on Interstate 95 and wandered into the grassy median a mile south of the State Road 44 interchange and twice over-corrected her steering, which caused the vehicle to roll over several times, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Ana Canina, 44, was pronounced dead on the accident scene, just west of the New Smyrna City limits. Her eldest child, Michelle, 12, was critically injured and transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

The deceased mother's boy, 9-year-old Christian, suffered only minor injuries. Neither the mom nor her two children were wearing their seat-belts, but the boy was not ejected from the 2002 Ford, the highway patrol reported.

The highway patrol did not have information readily available where the Miami woman was coming from when she was heading south on the interstate on her way home.
