Brush fire in Pioneer Trail woods this afternon brought under control

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The big plume of black smoke over the Causeway bridges this afternoon is from a brush fire in the 2800 block of Pioneer Trail that consumed about 10 acres of woods, but was no immediate threat to homes. The fire was brought under control by 5:30 p.m.

New Smyrna Beach Fire Department crews responded to the 1:45 p.m. blaze, which sent up a huge dark cloud that could be seen for miles.

Edgewater, Orange City, Deltona and Volusia County assisted New Smyrna Beach firefighters, in all about 40 firefighters, and the Florida Division of Forestry utilized bulldozer crews to keep it from fanning north to the Quail Hollow and Turnbull Plantation subdivisions.

A stretch of Pioneer Trail, from Otter Boulevard to Enterprise Avenue, was closed to allow crews to do their work, but no evacuations were planned.
.
Several nearby streets were closed briefly to allow fire crews to respond and set up a perimeter. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown.
