Cap and Trade a destructive and senseless piece of legislation

Carl Morey, 73 and a 1954 graduate of New Smyrna Beach High School, hit the hammer on the head when he said: ”The Cap and trade bill is one of the stupidest, most destructive pieces of legislation I have ever seen.”

The basic part of the bill imposes a stiff tax on any economic activity that creates carbon. The effect will be that everything we buy will become more expensive. Indirectly, it means that industries will pull back, move off shore or shut down altogether. This will lead to even more unemployment than we already have.

The alleged reason for doing this is what makes it all so stupid. We are doing this to counter man-made global warming. Estimates of the effect of our cap and trade bill on global temperatures run around .2 degrees Celsius. In other words, we are about to do untold damage to the economy to counter a threat that probably doesn’t exist with a program that would have negligible effect on that threat.

Like all of the recent measures this bill is being rushed so that no one has time to read or digest it. And among its supporters is Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach.

Communicating with the office of Kosmas and reading her web site we are told:

# She is a staunch backer of the bill;

# She believes man-made global warming is an important problem and this bill will address the problem; # The bill will stimulate the economy and create many new jobs in the renewable energy field;

# The cost of the bill will be quite low at several hundred dollars per person.

Supporters of cap and trade don’t want people to understand and discuss the implications of the bill and they certainly don’t want people to become aware of the many measures hidden in the bill such as a requirement to bring used houses up to new “green” standards before they can be sold.

This alone will cost the owners and new buyers thousands of dollars. It is very informative to compare what our congressmen and women are saying about the bill.

If you talk to the people in Melbourne Congressman Bill Posey’s office and read the extensive material on his web site you will be told the following:

# He strongly opposes the bill;

# The cap and trade bill is nothing but a huge tax on energy disguised as an attempt to cut carbon emissions and reduce global warming;

# The bill will have very little if any effect on carbon emissions or global temperatures;

# The effect on global temperatures would be measured in tenths of a degree Celsius;

# Obama and other backers of the bill have admitted that the bill would destroy the coal industry and make it impossible to build more coal fired electric plants;

# The bill will lead to a net destruction of jobs;

# In Europe where cap and trade has been introduced, it is estimated that 2.1 normal jobs are lost for every “green” job created by this legislation. It was calculated that in Spain about 50 thousand green jobs were created and 110 thousand non green jobs were lost;

# Some democrats are trying to add tariffs to the bill ostensibly to stem the flow of jobs out of the country;

# Cap and trade was invented by Enron to create an artificial business in trading carbon credits;

# The cost of the bill per person will eventually be quite high probably in the thousands of dollars; After studying the bill there is little doubt in my mind that citizens should contact their representatives and urge them to kill this bill before it can cause us untold grief.
