DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Like many fans of the NBA and 6-time NBA champion Michael Jordan in particular, Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry watched the 10-part documentary series, "The Last Dance," which focused on the 1997-98 season for Chicago -- Jordan's last season with the Chicago Bulls.

What Henry has not enjoyed are emerging criticisms of NBA superstar Lebron James of the Los Angeles Lakers in comparison with Jordan.

The documentary on ESPN and on ABC delivered never-before-seen footage and anecdotes from Jordan's former coaches, teammates and friends, along with unprecedented access to Jordan.

Daytona Beach's Derrick Henry, who once served as an assistant coach at Mainland High School when Vince Carter was on the varsity squad, liked the Michael Jordan documentary, but feels criticism of Lebron James as not being as tough or as good is unwarranted.

"The MJ documentary has been ultra enjoyable and enhanced my appreciation for his leadership skills and warrior mentality," Henry wrote on his Facebook page. "However, I am annoyed by the persistent Lebron hate that is emerging. What people don’t realize is that Lebron James is not Karl Malone, Charles Oakley, Dale Davis, Shawn Kemp, or Antonio Davis from other generations. He is Magic Johnson on steroids."

Henry continued: "What Scottie Pippen did defensively (by his own admission) to a 31-year-old Magic he never would have done to Lebron James. Also remember the turning point in that series was moving Michael off the bigger stronger Magic.

The two-term mayor who is seeking a third four-year term in the 2020 Elections, continued, "Stop disrespecting Lebron because you feel that Michael was a better player with smoother moves."

Henry continued, "Physically, Lebron is better suited to play point forward in the '80s and '90s than he is for the modern cotton ball basketball that we now enjoy."

Henry added, "A legal hand check from Lebron James in the 1990s would have been fierce."
