DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- You've come a long way, kid!

Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry is proud of his 12-year-old son, Derrick Henry Jr., the second oldest of three children.

"My guy closed out a successful 7th-grade campaign with the Principal’s straight A award," the mayor said, beaming with pride on the last day of the school year.

"He coupled that with being named All County Band (French Horn), most improved Cross Country, Rookie of the Year Basketball, Top 100 Reader, 2nd place in the State Piano Competition, and a much sought-after 12-year-old motivational speaker."

That's quite the list of school achievements for Derrick Jr., who finished seventh grade at Ormond Beach Middle School last week.

His dad, Derrick L. Henry, is an American politician who has served as the mayor of Daytona Beach since 2012. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served on the Daytona Beach City Commission from 2009 to 2012. He is the second Black mayor of Daytona Beach.

He is married to Dr. Stephanie Henry, an international education consultant and creator of learning programs. Mayor Henry has two sons, Michael and Derrick Jr., and a beautiful daughter named Paisley.
