Deltona man killed in three-wheel kit motorcycle accident

DELTONA -- A 25-year-old man was killed late Tuesday afternoon after he lost control of a three-wheel kit motorcycle in Deltona, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported.

The bike, which has an open-air vehicle cabin built onto the motorcycle chassis, flipped while turning onto Pilgrim Avenue from Normandy Boulevard and ended up in a residential driveway, Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.

The vehicle has no roof or seatbelts, and the driver was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene at 5:34 p.m. The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Jonathan Stapleton of Deltona and was not wearing a helmet, Davidson said.

"Based on preliminary evidence at the scene, deputies believe that speed may have been a contributing factor to the crash," the spokesman said, adding it is being investigated by the county law enforcement agency. "The vehicle is street legal, registered and has a tag."
