DELTONA -- A fight involving a knife in Deltona sent one man to the hospital with stab wounds and another man to jail charged with attempted first-degree murder Saturday night, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.
The victim's injuries were not life threatening, Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.
The incident started shortly after 9 p.m. when 28-year-old Jose Sorto-Ramos and 21-year-old Jose Gomez started fighting while they were both at a friend's house in the 2400-block of Alamanda Avenue, Haught said
"It's unknown what they were arguing about, but the homeowner asked the two to step outside so as not to disturb the family inside," Haught said. "Once in the front yard, Sorto-Ramos got a utility knife out of a vehicle in the driveway and said to Gomez, 'I will kill you.' The fight continued and Gomez was stabbed in the stomach area. Sorto-Ramos then fled the scene.
Gomez, who is from St. Augustine, was transported to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial by EVAC ambulance to be treated for injuries to his abdomen, right arm and right eye. Meanwhile, Volusia County Sheriff's deputies searched the area but did not find Sorto-Ramos.
Deputies advised neighbors about what had happened and asked them to be on the lookout for Sorto-Ramos, Haught said. At 1 a.m. Sunday residents spotted Sorto-Ramos in the area of Beal Street and East Juliet Drive and reported the sighting to the Sheriff's Office. The Orange City man was arrested without further incident and charged with attempted first-degree murder. He was then transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
