DAYTONA BEACH -- The Ocean Center will be converted to an indoor dirt biker's paradise, complete with the track, proving once again that Daytona is the center of racing.
Those who enjoy Bike Week and the Daytona 500 will certainly not want to miss the action Saturday as the opening round of the East Coast Racers Association (ECRA) Florida Pro-Am Supercross Championship takes place at the Ocean Center.
This new series, promoted by Finish Line Productions, is the first Supercross series focused on advancing amateur racers while offering exciting professional racing entertainment.
What is Supercross? The sister sport of motocross, supercross is held indoor stadiums on competition dirt motorcycles on specially constructed dirt track.
The track includes:
• Triple and double jumps as long as 70ft
• Technical sections with whoops, and variety of turns
• High action first corner turn called the “Holeshot” Professional Supercross is widely popular with televised broadcasts on CBS and the Speed Channel and attendance that exceeds even some NFL games.
Supercross champions like Ricky Carmicheal and James Stewart, both Florida natives, enjoy lucrative careers and mainstream notoriety.
Why is the ECRA Series Different? Traditionally, Supercross is has only been available to professional level riders. A group of young motocross enthusiasts from Florida and Colorado formed Finish Line Productions and the ECRA to create a series that would give amateur racers of all levels a place to build skills needed for Supercross and also give them unique opportunity to ride a Supercross track.
The series has two dates in Daytona and two in Kissimmee. This Saturday, riders of all ages, genders and skill levels will participate in one of 25 divisions. They will race on the newly constructed track at Ocean Center during the day program and compete for both the event win and to earn championship points in hopes of becoming the first ECRA amateur supercross champion in their division.
In the evening, the Ocean Center switches over for the pro racing “show.”
