NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- We are into the start of the three-day Memorial Day weekend. My wife, Sera, and I wish everyone a joyous holiday weekend.
It's a time for reflection, relaxation and togetherness as we pay tribute to the brave men and women of the military who have made the sacrifices that ensure our sovereignty as a nation of freedom and prosperity.
Many of you will be traveling near and far and the rule of thumb is to leave early and be alert on the road. Always wear your seatbelt and obey all traffic laws. It goes without saying, but is worth reminding that if you are going to drink, please have a designated driver.
This is the weekend where a lot of people hit the beach and New Smyrna Beach certainly has a beautiful one as does Daytona, Ormond, Ponce Inlet and other Volusia County coastal communities. Others will take to the Intracoastal Waterway for boating fun. Again, be sure to have a designated driver, if drinking, and please be mindful of the manatee wake zones and posted speeds.
Let's make this an enjoyable and safe holiday weekend in memory of those men and women who served our country with pride and distinction.
God bless us all.
