Legendary Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz has died at 89; won national championship in 1988

WSBT-TV video / Friday, March 6, 2026 / A legendary Notre Dame Football coach has died. The family of Lou Holtz released a statement saying he passed away at the age of 89 in Orlando. Holtz's coaching career spanned five decades. Holtz became a beloved member of the Notre Dame community. He began his head-coaching career with the Fighting Irish in 1986 and led the team to a National Championship in 1988. Lou Holtz spent 11 seasons as the head football coach at Notre Dame. But upon physically leaving that post in 1996, his heart never left Notre Dame. Holtz is still the third-winningest coach at Notre Dame.
