Lessons of 9/11: Islamic extremists will not back down; so we can't either

Looking at the hole in the ground where the World Trade Center once stood evokes about every emotion one can get. Watching both planes hit the World Trade Center evoked horror and anger as it was realized that this was no accident. Most people have come to the conclusion that we are at war with an intractable, non-ending enemy who will not give in until either they have total victory or we have total victory.

There is a lot of frustration with our leaders who still think that Islam is a religion of peace and that all we need to do is to act like good guys and all will work out ok. While many Muslims are peaceful, tolerant and reasonable people, the extremists who would exterminate us if they could will not stop until we exterminate them.

Coexistence with murderous fanatics who use the religion as their platform are people we still are not fully prepared to deal with. Americans need to face the reality that these extremists will not back down.

There is a lot of frustration with our security system that appears to give too much consideration to political correctness and not enough consideration to the practical aspects of security.

This frustration with our security may not be fully justified because we have been fairly free of major successful terror attacks in this country. Since it is certain that the terrorists are trying, their lack of success to this point can’t all be because of our good luck.

It is a fact of life that our intelligence agencies can’t talk about their successes for the simple reason that such talk will cause our successes to evaporate. Therefore, we will never know the full story nor should we.

It is frustrating that we still have not caught Osama bin Laden. However, people should realize what a difficult problem this is to find and capture him.

Finally, we have the situation that the spot where the World Trade Center once stood is still a hole in the ground. This appears to be a eloquent testament to the power bureaucracy to stop any progress in any area. It may take a few more decades before anything is done with that area.

Maybe it will be covered with mosques.
