Memorial Day: Time to reflect

DELTONA -- Today is Memorial Day, a day to remember those brave soldiers who gave everything and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Today, let us say a prayer for those who did not return and be grateful for those who came home. Let us honor all of them by observing this Memorial Day in quiet contemplation of the sacrifice they made so we can be a free country.

Whether it was World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan or any of the other battles where our men and women have shed American blood on foreign soil, our American service personnel have served with honor and courage. They have made this Country stronger, and surely, we are the land of the free because of these brave men and women.

I am the wife of a Vietnam vet, the daughter of a World War II veteran, an aunt to an Iraq War vet. I am blessed that the service men in my family, who went to war, came home. I can wrap my arms around them and be thankful they made it safely back.

But for those brave soldiers who did not return, who gave everything, it is their memory that we honor today, this Memorial Day.

Editor's Note:

Pat Northey is the term-limited district 5 Coiunty Councilwoman whose seat represents Deltona, DeBary and Enterprise. Though Northey wrote this as part of her newsletter, Headline Surfer® is publishing it in this forum because of the news value with the holiday. However, the 24/7 internet newspaper has excluded Northey's campaign message at the bottom of it, which is a gratuitous attempt to generate publicity for her 2014 campaign. Headline Surfer has a segnent on this in its "Making the Grade" political notebook.

Northey is challenging the incumbent office holder, at-large County Councilwoman Joyce Cusack o DeLand. Deltona City Commissioner Webster Barnaby and term-limited Holly Hill Mayor Roy also is running for the at-large seat. In Northeuy's current seat, the candidates are Rich Gailey of DeBary, Phil Giorno of Deltona, Deltona City Commissioner Fred Lowery, Jr., and Deltona resident Donald Mair.
