NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Before the new police station was built last year, the only public recognition of canine officer Roy L. Nelson Jr., and his dog, Ceasar, was a photo in the lobby of the former facility.

This decal, in remembrance of New Smyrna Beach k-9 partners Roy Nelson and Caesar, is affixed to every vehicle in the department.

A granite monument stands tall outside the $6.7 million police and fire complex as a tribute to Nelson and his k-9 partner. Both were killed in Nelson's squad vehicle in a collision with another vehicle that caused Nelson's vehicle to flip on the South Causeway while answering a call just before midnight on Aug. 13, 2005.

Nelson, 36, had been with the police force seven years. He and his loyal dog, Ceasar, were the first New Smyrna Beach police personnel killed in the line of duty.

Nelson left behind his wife, Angie, and two daughters, Samantha, 15, and Sabrina, 4.
