NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Joshua Mystica spoke softly, but carried a big piece of junk.
It took two hands to carry along, tangled wire mesh that he scooped out of the Indian River shoreline Sunday as part of Volusia County's annual Halifax/Indian River Clean-Up.
The 14-year-old New Smyrna Beach Middle School student and severeal other members of the Sea Scouts Ship 495 spent the morning either on a boat or on the shore, gathering up debris.
"I helped clean up the river to protect the planet," the Edgewater boy said.
Joshua and 614 other volunteers collected 11.6 tons of junk, some 6 tons less than the previous clean-up's total and with nearly two dozen fewer volunteers.
