DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry issued a statement on today's passing of Congressman David Scott, a Georgia Democrat. He was 80 years old.

Daytona Beach joins our state and nation in mourning the loss of Congressman David Scott.

A 1963 graduate of Campbell High School, Congressman Scott carried the lessons of hard work and service with him throughout his life. As a young man here in Daytona Beach, he helped his father build the family’s garbage collection business early work that shaped his lifelong commitment to working families and community.

First elected to Congress in 2002, he went on to serve Georgia’s 13th District for more than two decades. He made history as the first African American to chair the House Agriculture Committee, and gave more than 50 years to public service at the state and federal level.

I am personally grateful for his example of public service. His journey from helping his father in business here in Daytona Beach to the halls of Congress reminds us that dedication and humility can change the course of history. Daytona Beach is proud to have been part of his awe inspiring journey.
