Thanksgiving a time to take stock in what we have

At this time of the year, many of us need to be reminded of what we have to be thankful for because sometimes it is easy to forget. Here in Florida, we live in a really nice place to grow up and raise a family; especially here in Florida, though with scarcity of jobs our young people are having to go elsewhere.

I have gone to great lengths to be able to live here in New Smyrna Beach. Many of my classmates have also done so. We have done this even though the economic opportunities are not as great as elsewhere. The climate is great, the beach is great, the problems including crime and traffic are manageable. All in all, this is a wonderful place to be.

Many people are worried about the country’s future.

Potentially, the country’s future is bright. There is no problem that can’t be fixed by making the right moves. The economic problems we face today are caused artificially by bad governmental policy. America's capability to prosper and lead the world in a constructive manner exceed that of any other country.

America is blessed that the vast majority of people hold religious beliefs that, when followed, allow them to live in peace and tolerance with everybody. The people in our society who are militantly intolerant is thankfully quite small.

Most Americans have a culture that holds that everyone is as good as everyone else and your success and standing in the community depend on your own accomplishments and not on being borne into some nobility. This is a point of view that is more common of Americans than other peoples. There are countries in which a large segment of the population believe that a person is constrained by the situation into which he or she was born.

The fortunate result of this cultural characteristic of Americans is that individual success is mostly a result of individual effort. This assertion is supported by the fact that about 80% of millionaires are self made.

Regardless of personal wealth, the richness of life here is better than most other places in a world where the pursuit of happiness is but a dream. This Thanksgiving Holiday weekend is an opportune time for Americans to take stock in what we have and be thankful for it.
