Tornado touches down in Port Orange and damages 100-plus mobile homes; NSB endures thunder and lightning

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A severe thunderstorm and tornado warning from the National Weather Service proved prophetic Friday night in Port Orange with a twister destroying at least seven mobile homes there and more than a hundred others damaged while New Smyrna Beach endured thunder and lightning that caused intermittent power outages.

Nobody was seriously injured in the storm that blanketed Volusia County earlier tonight, though one person received cuts from flying glass in Port Orange, officials there said.

The damage zone was clearly in Port Orange where residents reported a tornado touching down just before 6:30 p.m..at Madeline Avenue and Nova Road, according to the weather service and Port Orange police. A funnel cloud from the beach touched down in Ormond Beach.

Friday night's storm means the beaches are ripe for rip currents this weekend, the weather service cautions.
