DAYTONA BEACH -- Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International Airport (DBIA) decreased 40 percent in January 2009 compared with January 2008.
During January, 28,102 total passengers arrived and departed through the county-operated airport, compared with the 46,777 travelers recorded in January 2008. For the 12-month period ending Jan. 31, 576,196 passengers traveled through DBIA, compared with 695,418 total passengers in 2008 and representing a 17 percent decrease.
According to airport officials, January’s traffic decrease resulted from fewer available airline seats and fewer airlines serving Daytona Beach compared to 2008. (AirTran Airways discontinued service in May 2008 and Continental Airlines discontinued service in September 2008.) Loss of AirTran and Continental, combined with declining general economic conditions, contributed to the overall decline in passenger traffic.
Delta Air Lines and US Airways continue to serve Daytona Beach International Airport passengers, offering daily nonstop service to Atlanta and Charlotte and providing travelers with hundreds of daily connections to numerous domestic and international destinations.
