DAYTONA BEACH -- The Florida Housing Finance Corp. has awarded $1 million in State Housing Initiatives Partnership disaster funds to the City of Daytona Beach and another $1 million to Volusia County to assist families affected by recent flooding.
SHIP generally provides funds to local governments as an incentive to create partnerships that produce and preserve affordable home-ownership and multifamily housing.
In this instance, the funds will be used specifically to help floodvictims and must be spent in accordance with the following requirements:
● Funds must be expended under the disaster mitigation/recovery strategy in the local housing assistance plan.
● The funding must meet program requirements, which include providing assistance to eligible persons occupying eligible housing, and
the expenditure must be related directly to assisting victims of flooding.
● The funds must be used by Dec. 31 or an extended deadline approved by Florida Housing.
According to Emory Counts, director of economic and community development for the City of Daytona Beach, the SHIP funds will enable
the city to expand assistance to include income-eligible residents in rental units. Edward Jasper, Volusia County’s community assistance
director, said the county will use the funds to provide assistance to income-eligible residents outside Daytona Beach. City and county officials expect to be ready to accept applications for SHIP funds by the middle of the week.
