NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Still reeling from record flood waters last month, New Smyrna Beach and much of the region soaked up another 3 inches of rain earlier today, with drizzling into the night, according to the National Weather Service.
With a 70 percent chance of rain for Friday, the city could see even more precipitation through Saturday, though nowhere near the nearly 20 inches that came with the mid-May rainstorms.
A lightning strike that damaged a transmission line to the New Smyrna Beach Utility Commission's Field Street Substation knocked out power for 13,000 customers on the beachside and downtown areas for some 90 minutes before being restored about 3 p.m., said agency spokeswoman Ellen Fisher.
The National Weather Service in Melbourne reported 2 inches fell in Deltona and 3 inches in New Smyrna Beach, between 2 and 3:30 p.m.
