George Fred Heise, 77, of New Smyrna Beach, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Southeast Volusia and a former member of the New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission was arrested last night on charges of prowling and peeking through a neighbor's bushes to look at her in her nightgown, according to a New Smyrna Beach police report.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A prominent 77-year-old New Smyrna Beach man was arrested last night on charges of prowling, including allegations he hid in bushes and watched a woman dressed in her nightgown in her home, before he was caught by police after trying to run off when they responded.

George Fred Heise, of 105 Cunningham Drive, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Southeast Volusia and a former member of the Utlilities Commission of New Smyrna Beach, was charged with loitering and prowling, as well as resisting an officer without violence, in the 10:04 p.m. incident at the house next door to his.

This is what Sgt. Valerie Joyce wrote as a synopsis of what happened: "The New Smyrna Beach Police Department responded to a report of a prowler, watching the victim and hiding in the bushes of the victim’s back yard. The suspect fled upon police arrival. He was apprehended by the New Smyrna Beach K-9. He was treated at Bert Fish Medical Center, then transported to Volusia County Branch Jail."

Because of the nature of the alleged crime, NSBNEWS.net will not identify the 48-year-old woman, who was dressed in her nightgown and preparing to go to bed when she spotted the accused leering at her from behind the bushes.

The victim called police and when units arrived, the prowler jumped out of the bushes and ran, but a police dog caught up with him, clamping down on his butt.

Heise was treated at Bert Fish for canine bite wounds to his behind and an arm and then transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail on $1,000 bail.
