NSB cops: Suspected shoplifter apprehended after swimming across river in attempt to get away

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A larceny suspect swam across the Indian River in an attempt to get away from police just west of the Diamond Head condominiums and ran into the 300 block of Quay Assisi before he was apprehended and arrested Tuesday, police said.

Ronald James Walker of DeLand was wanted on an outstanding warrant from Lake County, charging him with grand theft.

Police responded to a larceny at the Winn-Dixie, 1835 State Road 44, receiving a report of a larceny suspect seen leaving in a green Dodge Durango with a North Carolina tag just before 3 p.m. The vehicle was pulled over, but the driver ran.

"A perimeter was established and canine units were called to assist with the search," police Sgt. Eugene Griffith said. " At one point, the subject swam across the river and fled into the Quay Assisi subdivision."

Walker was charged with possession of a Controlled Substance and larceny (shoplifting), Griffith said. He was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
