As little as $5 can help victims of quake-rocked Haiti

We live in a fractious world with countries always fighting with each other over every little thing. You start to wonder why there's so much hate.

Then something as horrendous as the tragedy in Haiti happens and we see the real world. There are people from all walks of life in all different countries dropping what they are doing, leaving their jobs and rushing to help find trapped survivors with their dogs and equipment. Doctors and medical supplies are coming from all parts of the world. Everyone is coming together to help people they don’t even know.

I heard last night that people from all over the world donated a million dollars via text message and that was in a matter of hours.

I think everyone thinks to themselves at times like these that “there by the Grace of God go I."

We all want to help in some way. Former President Bill Clinton saidnow is the time that even as little as $5 helps. People like me can’t physically go there to help and being on a fixed income can’t afford to give a lot of money, but he made a hit with that point. My measly $5 will help and I will send it.

The pictures coming from that area, as CNN's Larry King said, are stomach turning. I can’t imagine being in their position. They are living a nightmare and can’t wake up, but at least by now they know that people care and are flocking to help them. I hope they can make order out of the chaos quickly, set up shelters, even if only tents, and get medical help to the walking wounded.

Bad as it is, the response from the world changes my perception of the people of the world whose humanity I had been questioning just before the quake.

We are our brother’s keeper. Please do what you can to help.
