NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Two men were arrested early Friday on burglary charges and are now considered suspects in the recent rash of predominantly beachside residential properties, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Joseph Leonard Bompadre, 40, of 3104 Natchez Lane, Edgewater, and Daniel L. Ellis, 38, of 628 Dora St., New Smyrna Beach, wereeach arrested on charges of burglary to a residence and possession of burglary tools.

Here is a synopsis of what happened as described by New Smyrna Beach police spokesman Sgt. Michael Brouillette: Since late January, police and Sheriff's detectives have been investigating multiple residential burglaries in New Smyrna Beach and surrounding areas. A majority of the residences were vacation rentals and contained electronic equipment.

Brouileete added that on Jan. 19, at approximately 2:23 a.m., New Smyrna Beach police stopped a suspicious vehicle, which was seen in the 400 block of South Atlantic Avenue. That vehicle, "a blue maroon Plymouth minivan, matched the description of a possible suspect vehicle that was observed at the scene of a residential burglary yesterday. On-duty officers were also working an additional residential burglary that occurred earlier in the evening where evidence was recovered and also one reported simultaneous to the investigative stop."

Following that stop, burglary tools and a flat-pnel TV were recovered, Brouillette said.

Brouileete said the investigation is ongoing.

Informed of the arrests, New Smyrna Beach Mayor Adam Barringer sent NSBNEWS.net a text message congratulating the police department: "Great job."
