Now that so many Democrats have been thrown out of office for following an insane course of action, what should the country’s leaders be doing to get the country running in the right direction? If they don’t do at least some of the right things, the electorate will throw them out just like they have thrown out the present crop of losers.
Part of the answer to that question is quite simple: Just reverse what we have been doing for the last two years. After that we should reverse a lot of what we have been doing for the last 80 years but that will take a long time so we should just concentrate on the most immediate problems.
Some of the immediate steps that should be done include but are not limited to the following:
- Make the Bush tax cuts permanent and then make the cuts even deeper.
- Cancel any taxes that have been introduced in the last two years.
- Let the housing market fall to its’ natural level so it can clear and normal lending can start up again.
- Phase out Fannie and Freddy Mae.
- Rescind all of the health care legislation that has just been passed.
- Introduce market based reforms into the medical care market.
- Rescind all of the regulations that have passed in the last two years and then rescind most of the regulations that have been passed in the last forty years. Sarbanes Oxley is just one of many regulations that comes to mind.
- Lower all trade barriers.
- Put all stimulus money that hasn’t been contracted out back into the treasury. Note that once a government contract has been let it is usually cheaper to let it run its’ course than to cancel it.
- Stabilize the dollar.
This list is just a subset of what could be done to improve our economy. We haven’t even touched on such things as earmarks or reforming Social Security and a lot others that would help if they could be effectively addressed.
It would be really great if even a few items on this list could be addressed in an effective way.
Sad experience has shown that getting any of these things addressed will require a difficult fight.
Getting politicians to agree to do anything that will actually benefit the country usually requires a miracle. The above list would require a multitude of miracles.
