PIERSON -- A 25-year-old DeLand man was killed when he crashed his Ford Taurus into a motor coach early Saturday doing 100 mph-plus and cutting his car in half, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Here is a synopsis of the FHP report: Roberto Romero was southbound on U.S. 17 in excess of 100 miles per hour when he traveled partially onto the west grass shoulder and then over-corrected back to the left. He then traveled across the center line and into the northbound lane and over corrected back to the right and then to the left into the northbound lane and into the path of the tour bus while spinning. The Taurus was then cut in half behind the front seats.

The 1:18 a.m. accident occurred, of all places, 1 mile north of Purdom Cemetery Road, home to a cemetery.

The motor coach was transporting a musical group. The driver, Euler Torres-Martinez, 29, of Sunnyside, Wash., was not hurt. Neither were his three adult passengers, the highway patrol said.
