God bless America: 'Justice has been done'

Osama bin Laden is deadOsama bin Laden is dead! This is something Americans have been waiting to hear for nearly a decade since the cowardly Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Great credit goes to President Obama who ordered the operation that led to Bin Laden's death in a gun battle inside Pakistan by a small group of brave American military personnel.

"Justice has been done," Obama said on national TV. What happened Sunday goes a long way to reinforcing Obama's standing as our president and a strong leader. Bin Laden was shot in the head. Three others with him were killed as well. No Americans in the operation were injured. Neither were any innocent women and children.

President Barack ObamaFormer President George W. BushFormer President George W. Bush deserves a lot of praise, too, for all he did in the wake of 9/11.

Praise also goes to our military personnel,  the best in the world. Many have risked their lives over the last 10 years trying to track down Bin Laden. Now Osama bin Laden is dead. Shot in the head, no less.

I am a Democrat. I am a conservative. I am an American.

But this is not about being Democrat. It's not about being Republican. It's not about liberal. It's not about conservative.  It's about leadership. It's about America. It's about our democracy.

Unlike the failed leadership of Jimmy Carter and the helicopter crashes in the desert in trying to rescue the American hostages from Iran that propelled Ronald Reagan to the White House, the mission ordered by President Obama that had two American helicopters swooping into the heart of Pakistan, just a hundred miles from the capital of Islamabad.

Of all places to take out and kill Bin Laden, a town called Abbottabad. How prophetic the word "bad" in that town's name for the terrorist most hated and most hunted in the history of our great nation.

For the thousands killed in the collapse of the Twin Towers as well as the destruction at the Pentagon and a plane downed in a Pennsylvania field by the doomed American passengers who declared, "Let's roll," in preventing further bloodshed, Sunday, May 1, is a day of redemption.

Bin Laden is dead, his body recovered, his identity reportedly confirmed through DNA. But the war on terror is far from dead. Al qaeda is alive and well. So America and its allies around the world cannot stand down.

Obama's message on safety was clear: "The cause of securing our country is not complete. But tonight, we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to. That is the story of our history, whether it's the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place."

Amen...
